Heart-healthy, Low-sodium Diet

Salt, in moderation, is a necessary mineral that helps to regulate and maintain normal fluid balance in the body. But, with the overload of convenient, salt-laden processed foods and easy-to-order, takeaway options, salt can be more harmful than beneficial, because we may be consuming too much of it. The good news is there are simple swaps to help cut down on sodium in your diet!

Cobb Salad

Natural goodness

Fresh and frozen produce are great ways to cut down on the salt; they’re filling, nutrient-dense, and–well, they just taste good! If you need to buy canned produce, be sure to look out for “no sodium added.”

Meats and meals

When looking for meat, poultry and fish, try shopping fresh and avoid products packed in saline solutions, often used in preserving products and tenderizing. Also, deli meats, cured products and processed items will have higher sodium content, so shop carefully and sparingly. Frozen meals and canned soups can all be processed with tons of salt, but with healthier options available a quick heat-and-eat soup for lunch or mashed cauliflower as a dinner plate side can be warm and satisfying with sodium-free!

Shop the label

Speaking of “no sodium added,” you can also look for “low sodium” and “no salt added” when shopping for your frozen faves or pantry staples. Enjoy a rich assortment of creamy nut butters and better-for-you bulk goodness all without the added salt!

Sauce rules

Just because something doesn’t taste salty, doesn’t mean it isn’t. Jarred sauces and dried mixes are often culprits of hidden sodium bombs–so when able, try to make sauces yourself. Season with fresh herbs, spices and salt-free spice blends for flavor. And remember, acid is your friend! So, if you’re looking to add some zing to your meal, a squeeze of bold citrus or a splash of vinegar can punch things up without the salt.

At Sprouts, we source only the best dairy, eggs and cheese for you and your family to enjoy. That’s why we take good care to ensure our products are full of all the goodness you need, without all the things you don’t. When you shop our wide variety of eggs and dairy, like cage-free eggs or rBST-free milk, you can feel good knowing these household staples are crafted with quality in mind. Milk

Delicious dairy

With so many different labels like raw, pasteurized, rBST-free, grass-fed and organic, it can be hard to know what you’re looking for when choosing your milk. At Sprouts, we make it simple by proudly carrying ALL rBST-free* milk and yogurt! rBST was created in the 90s to increase a cow’s ability to produce milk. Although the dairy industry has been allowed to use rBST in their cows for decades, we believe non-GMO and rBST-free milk is best. Plus, we strive to work with local dairy farms whenever possible to source high-quality, wholesome milk. When you enjoy locally-sourced milk from Sprouts, you’re not only supporting the community, but you get to experience fresher, tastier milk straight from the farm to your table.

What about organic?

When you shop USDA Certified Organic milk, cheese or yogurts, you can feel confident it’s free from rBGH or rBST. Strict regulations are set by the USDA to prohibit the use of any synthetic hormone in certified organic products. Certified organic milk also requires the animal to be kept in a healthy, low-stress environment—happy cows make the best milk!

Grass-fed? We have that too!

The term “grass-fed” has been a hot topic in the meat industry for a while and it’s beginning to make a strong name in the dairy industry as well! Grass-fed dairy means that the cows are fed only grass during their life–no corn, soy or grains. Some organic milk will come from grass-fed cows since organic standards require some access to the outdoors, allowing for natural grazing.

*Sprouts offers pasture-raised and other varieties of milk and eggs. Milk is pasteurized before bottling, except in AZ and CA where raw milk is sold.

Egg-ucation

Cage-free, free-range, pasture-raised … oh my!

All of our Sprouts Brand eggs are cage-free or better and we strive to ensure any other brand we bring into our store upholds at least cage-free standards.
  • Cage-free: This means the animal is not contained in a cage and they are free to walk around in a sheltered environment. However, this method doesn’t require the animal to have any outdoor access.
  • Free-range: The USDA’s definition for free-range requires the bird has access to the outdoors in some capacity. If a brand claims “free-range”, it often means that the animal has access to the outdoors but doesn’t mean they are certified free-range. The HFAC’s Certified Humane® requires at least 2 sq. ft. per bird with at least six hours of outside time per day.
  • Pasture-raised: This requires at least 108 sq. ft. of outdoor access per bird year-round and indoor protection available for the animal in order to be certified pasture-raised.

  • Cheese Varieties

    More cheese, please!

No matter how you slice it …

A good, quality cheese is always grate. All of our bulk cheeses are fresh cut daily in-store and crafted from all-natural, whole milk. Plus, all of our bulk cheeses and packaged shredded cheeses are rBST-free! We carry a wide variety of specialty cheeses like creamy gouda made from grass-fed cow’s milk, hand-crafted blue cheese and delectable mozzarella from Wisconsin—and so many more! Don’t just take our curd for it, next time you whip up a tasty cheese board, browse our delicious selection of craft cheeses and try something new.

Hatch ChilesHatch ’em while you can!

The tapered green chiles known as Hatch chiles are exclusively grown in the farmlands of Hatch, New Mexico. In season from late summer to early fall, Hatch chiles are beloved by fans due to their robust and spicy flavor. Because only chiles of this variety, grown in the Hatch region of New Mexico, can be called Hatch, there is another name for the same type of chile. Anaheim chiles are attributed to farmer Emilio Ortega who brought the seeds from New Mexico to Anaheim, California in 1894. The only difference is in the heat of the chiles, as the Anaheim is much milder than the Hatch chile.

    Perfect pickin’

When it comes to picking the perfect Hatch chiles, keep your eyes peeled for firm, smooth peppers with no blemishes, soft spots or wrinkles. Once picked, wrap unwashed Hatch chiles in a paper towel, place in a sealed container and refrigerate. They should keep for up to 14 days.

    How hot are Hatch chiles?

Capsaicin is the chemical compound that gives all peppers their heat. Quantifying this is the Scoville heat unit scale, or SHU. A little bit of a wild card, Hatch chiles range from 1,000–8,000 SHU. What does this mean? For comparison, here are some peppers with their SHU heat range:
    • Green peppers 0 SHU
    • Anaheim peppers 500-1,000 SHU
    • Jalapeños 2,500-8,000 SHU
    • Habaneros 100,000-350,000 SHU

How to roast Hatch chiles at home

While you can certainly eat Hatch chiles raw, they are best when roasted. Roasting the chiles mellows out the pepper’s potential fiery heat and lends to the distinctive, rich flavor of the chile. Additionally, the skins are tougher than other peppers. Properly roasting them makes removing the tough skins easier. Roasting Hatch chiles at home is easy—all you need to do is char the skin of the pepper. You can do this on a grill, in your broiler, or even with a pair of tongs over a gas flame on your stove. Our preferred method is via the oven.

    Here’s how it’s done:

    1. Set the oven on broil and the whole process should take 10–12 minutes.
    2. Turn the peppers as the tops blister and char until they’re done on all sides, then remove.
    3. Immediately seal them in a resealable bag or foil and allow to cool. Cooling in the bag/foil will make the charred outer skin pull away from the pepper, making them a breeze to peel.
    4. When they are cool, remove them from the bag and use your fingers to gently peel the dark, blistered skin off, under cool running water.
    5. Slice down the length of the pepper and remove the top and seeds.
Tip: Stock up! Roasted Hatch chiles freeze beautifully, so you can enjoy their fresh Southwestern flavor long after their window of availability has closed.

Tip 2: Try a New Crust

Cauliflower crust is a great alternative to the classic dough-based pie. Bring the crust to life with a unique sauce and bold toppings, like this chicken tikka masala pizza, to add a ton of flavor!

    View Recipe

    Pizza with vegetables

    Tip 3: Spice it up

Sure, traditional pizzas typically have Italian flavors, but why not look to other countries for inspiration? This upgraded, Mexican-style pizza brings the heat! Topped with jalapeños, red onion, sweet corn and creamy cotija cheese, there will be no slices left behind!

    View Recipe

Tip 4: Ditch the Baking Sheet

Baking sheets and pizza stones often keep the steam from escaping, so we suggest placing the pizza directly on the middle rack of the oven. This will allow for the hot air to surround the entire pizza and make the crust especially crispy. Simply slide the frozen pie directly onto the rack and enjoy your pizza’s perfect crunch.

    Tip 5: Let it Cool

Once your pizza is done baking, let it cool for 2–3 minutes before slicing. We know you’re excited to bite into your fresh-from-the-oven pizza, but waiting allows the cheese to settle and reduces the risk of burning the roof of your mouth.

In partnership with the Environmental Working Group, Sprouts wants to share the importance of sun safety. With the right natural sunscreen, you can soak up the best parts of the sun without harming your skin.
    Safe sunscreens with beach towels

    Which Sunscreen is Best?

There are so many options when searching for a sunscreen and lots of things to remember, but EWG makes it easy with quick tips and resources. Keep these three simple tips in your back pocket when choosing or applying your sunscreen:

  • Always use a cream or spray sunscreen. FDA’s sunscreen rules bar sunscreen wipes and powders. Read more about why not to use sunscreen wipes or powders.
  • Don’t combine products. Skip products that combine bug repellent with sunscreen. Bugs are typically not a problem during the hours when UV exposure peaks. Also, sunscreen may need to be reapplied more frequently than repellent, or vice versa.
  • Skip tanning oils. Avoid anything that contains less than a 15 SPF value. Read more about tanning oils from EWG.

  • Simple Ways to Protect Your Skin

    • Apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before going outdoors.
    • Don’t forget to use enough! Most adults need at least 1.5 ounces of sunscreen.
    • Look for broad-spectrum zinc-oxide, which blocks aging UVA rays and burning UVB rays. Read more about UVA and UVB rays here.
    • Help preserve our oceans and marine life by choosing a reef-safe sunscreen.

    • Use Lower SPF

    • Don’t use super-high SPF products.
    • SPF stands for “sun protection factor” and refers only to protection against UVB radiation, which burns the skin. It has little to do with protection from sun’s UVA rays, which penetrate deep into the skin, suppress the immune system, accelerate skin aging and may cause skin cancer.
    • High-SPF products may give people a false sense of security, tempt them to stay in the sun too long and suppressing sunburns that may increase the risk of other kinds of skin damage. The FDA is considering limiting SPF claims to 50+, as is done in other countries.
    • EWG recommends that consumers avoid products labeled with anything higher than SPF 50 and reapply sunscreen often, regardless of SPF.

    • Use Cleaner Products

    • EWG recommends products without oxybenzone.
    • Commonly used in sunscreens, the chemical oxybenzone penetrates the skin, gets into the bloodstream and acts like estrogen in the body. It can also trigger allergic reactions. Data is preliminary, but studies have found a link between higher concentrations of oxybenzone and health harms.
    • EWG recommends products without retinyl palmitate.
    • The FDA has yet to rule on the safety of retinyl palmitate in skin care products, but EWG recommends that consumers avoid sunscreens containing this chemical.
    • Sunscreens containing these products have been found to cause stress to living organisms in our oceans. Choosing cleaner products can help reduce the impact we leave on our coral reefs.

    • Still Not Sure?

Woman standing outside in the sun

    Boost your mood… naturally!

We’re all spending a little extra time indoors right now, but as the weather begins to warm up and the sun is shining longer, take advantage of the great outdoors! Give yourself those much-needed breaks while working from home or taking care of the kids, and step outside for at least 5-10 minutes throughout your day. Not only will the fresh air help clear your mind, but the sunshine will help increase your body’s vitamin D level. Vitamin D has been shown to help boost your immune system while reducing anxiety and depression. It may also reduce the risk of osteoporosis by assisting in the absorption of calcium into your system.

    How does vitamin D work?

Vitamin D is unique because it’s not readily available in the body on its own. When you spend time outside, your body metabolizes UVB rays by way of your kidneys and liver, converting those rays into the active form of Vitamin D. On days that your outdoor exposure is limited, small amounts of vitamin D can be found in foods like fish, egg yolks and some dairy products.

Easy ways to get outside more.

With routines shifting daily, it’s important to schedule time for yourself. Here are some quick and easy tricks to increase the time you spend outside:
    • Take a walk first thing in the morning. Not only will this increase your activity for the day, you will feel more energized for a productive day.
    • Set an hourly alarm. Working from home can create a habit of sitting for too long. Set an alarm to step outside for five minutes and breath some fresh air.
    • Create a step goal for yourself. Get more time outside by setting a non-negotiable, daily step goal for yourself. You will find yourself motivated to boost your step count while getting some refreshing time outside.
    • Include your family. Add a family walk to your at-home routine–a great way to spend quality time outside of the house.
    • Take your workout outside. Switch up your at-home workout scenery by taking your bands, yoga mat or body outside for a great sweat-sesh!
While spending extra time outside does wonders for your mental health, energy and wellbeing, don’t forget to properly protect your skin, too. Broad spectrum sunscreen and protective clothing and eyewear are essential to keeping your skin healthy while outdoors.
