Cheering for Cherries

Cherry season is upon us! Throughout the summer, the produce aisles at Sprouts will be piled high with bags of the crimson beauties (and maybe some yellow-pink Rainiers, too). A popular seasonal favorite, we carry the best quality and variety of cherries—just for you! Aside from their sweet tang and portability, cherries also happen to have one of the highest levels of antioxidants of any fruit, about the same as blueberries. Antioxidants help to counter damage done to our cells by free radicals.

Where Do All These Sweet Summer Cherries Come From?

We’re proud to partner with amazing growers to fill our produce aisles with the freshest, peak season cherries bursting with flavor. Connecting with local farmers means we can source unique varieties from different climates for a truly special cherry season where Sprouts shoppers get to experience every cherry taste under the sun. Enjoy this summer sweet treat!

Meet a Washington Grower

Plump and juicy cherries transform any bite into something worth celebrating. Summer’s sweetest are ripe for the pickin’—we’ve sourced the freshest, most flavorful cherry varieties for you to enjoy.

With a passion for harvesting the season’s most incredible fruit, Chelan Fresh represents family-owned farms like Gebbers Farms. In 1910, Hawkins Gebbers’ great-grandparents began growing the tastiest apples and cherries in Brewster, Washington, and as years passed, their farm grew, and so did their family. Now, this family-owned and operated farm maintains only the most natural farming practices, so you’re left with the sweet fruits of their labor.

At Sprouts, our sourcing practices, paired with our strong relationships with local growers, are part of how we bring you the freshest produce all year long. Chelan Fresh is one of the many unique, family-owned farms used to source juicy cherries. Located in Washington along the Cascade Mountains, the clean rivers and warm mountain sun allow them to grow their Chelan Fresh Dark Sweet Cherries every season for peak freshness. These cherries are grown to exacting standards to ensure the best flavor and experience during their short season, so grab them while you can!

Learn How to Pick the Best Cherries

When picking red cherries, look for large, firm fruit with a deep red-to-burgundy color. Rainier cherries should also be large and firm with yellow and red blushed skin. Brown spotting on Rainier cherries usually indicates higher sugar. Avoid cherries of any variety if the skin is soft or blemished or if they are sticky and leaking. While most of us know cherries as a snack or ingredient in pies, tarts and other desserts, their sweetness makes for a great addition to savory dishes, too! Cherries are also delicious when pitted and dried, adding a delightful texture and flavor when added to salads, salsa, baked goods and more!

Seasonality Matters

Cherry season is exciting because it doesn’t last long and these sweet gems are loved by many–for a tasty reason! When picking your next batch, it’s important to know when and where your cherries were harvested for peak freshness. April kicks off the harvesting season in Southern California and comes to an end by early June. By this time, the cherry varieties from Washington are ready to go until late August. Their seasons are short and sweet, but that’s what keeps us coming back for more every year!

Meet the knowledgeable team members from our Vitamin Department who are inspiring others to stay well and take care of themselves. Learn how they’ve adapted to their new routines and what vitamins and supplements they’re using to feel their best every day.

Rihab Team Member

Rihab, Las Vegas, NV

Q: What does your daily wellness routine look like and what products help fuel your day?

A: “I wake up at 3:30am and complete an at-home workout to start my day. I like to switch it up from meditation, yoga, running or HIIT training. After my workout, I head to work where I get to help and empower customers. I take a variety of vitamins and supplements to help boost my immune system. I’m taking Green Vibrance, probiotics, zinc, a multivitamin, vitamin D, curcumin, a vitamin B complex and MyCommunity Mushrooms along with vitamin C. I have amped up my vitamin C intake to about 2000mg and my vitamin D to 5000IU. In addition to these, the most important thing I can do is focus on my sleep—I aim for at least eight hours to feel my best.”

Q: How have you been taking care of yourself or others during this time?

A: “I’ve been able to continue my hobbies like hiking, biking, running, meditation and reading which has been helpful. Self-care is important to me, so I like to relax with my essential oil diffuser and my favorite scent is Medieval Mix from Aura Cacia. After my workouts, a nice magnesium bath and a Pacifica face mask helps me relax. While I’m at work I get to provide product knowledge to customers and my fellow co-workers. I recommend eating healthy, nutritious foods that are high in vitamin C, D, zinc, fiber and antioxidants. Please continue taking your multivitamins and supplements of choice every day! Lastly, do something that makes you happy! We can all use a daily activity that produces joy in a time like this.”

Mac, Sacramento, CA

Q: What does your daily wellness routine look like and what products help fuel your day?

A: “I‘ve had to make a few adjustments to my daily routine since I cannot participate in team sports or go to the gym, so I’ve modified my exercise to include running outdoors and utilizing a doorframe pull-up bar to complete at-home workouts. Vitamins, supplements and nutrition play a big role in how I feel day-to-day, so I’ve been focusing on taking zinc, Vitamin D3, probiotics and omega-3s every day. After an intense run, I like to fuel my body with Sprouts Vanilla Whey Protein.”

Q: How have you been taking care of yourself or others during this time?

A: “I believe that exercise is the best form of self-therapy. From an improved mood, to a more restful sleep, it really helps me feel my best. Along with a good workout, I like to recover and take care of myself with an Epsom salt bath and a blend of massage oils mixed with essential oils. Optimal hydration and balanced nutrition are also a daily priority for me. This time has also been an opportunity to share knowledge with our teammates and customers around proper nutrition and supplements.”

Kenzie Team Member

Kenzie, Carlsbad, CA

Q: What does your daily wellness routine look like and what products help fuel your day?

A: “Every day I eat breakfast and take my vitamins, which includes a probiotic, multivitamin, adrenal support and an omega-3 supplement. I get a good at-home workout done at night. I’ve gotten creative with common items in my home as weights like water jugs, backpacks full of books and even using large bags of Sprouts Epsom Salt!”

Q: How have you been taking care of yourself or others during this time?

A: “I have added a few new supplements to my routine like Source Natural Wellness Formula. I love this product because it contains a good amount of vitamin D, which is an important supplement during a time when we’re staying indoors. I’ve also been reaching for Sprouts Oil of Oregano lately as it contains natural antifungal and antibacterial properties. Another essential that I’ve added to my morning routine is Sprouts Fizzy Vitamin C packets. These contain essential electrolytes and B-vitamins and give me energy throughout the day. I’ve also been focusing on self-care with some of my favorite beauty products like the Earth Kiss Mud Mask or using essential oils to keep the air in my home smelling fresh and relaxing.”

Kayla Team Member

Kayla, Scottsdale, AZ

Q: What does your daily wellness routine look like and what products help fuel your day?

A: “I‘ve used this time to create a routine around reading, spending more time on the phone with friends and creating at-home workouts. Staying active is important for my overall wellness because it helps reduce stress and support the immune system. I’m fueling my body with fresh fruits and vegetables like blueberries, leafy greens and other foods that are high in vitamins C and A. I like to supplement my nutrition with Garden of Life‘s Whole Food multivitamin to help fill any nutritional gaps in my diet. Every meal is a fun challenge to be nutritionally strategic with ingredients.”

Q: How have you been taking care of yourself or others during this time?

A: “My roommate and I hold each other accountable to make sure we’re both taking our supplements and nutrition seriously while being considerate of each other’s sleep. We both take our vitamins and supplements daily to fill nutritional gaps with the addition of Silver Wing’s Colloidal silver. Colloidal silver is known to help boost the immune system and is an antibacterial. I’ve recently been taking care of myself by taking baths with Empower CBD Bath Salt or a Soul Spring Bath Bomb. As a licensed massage therapist, I love our line of Gaiam Yoga and massage tools. I use my foam roller and neck cradle every day.”

Cheri Team Member

Cheri, Lynnwood, WA

Q: What does your daily wellness routine look like and what products help fuel your day?

A: “I like to start my morning with two hot drinks—Four Sigmatic Mushroom Coffee and Vital Proteins Matcha Collagen Latte a few hours later. I take Carlson Vitamin D + K2, Wiley’s Fish Oil, New Chapter Complete Gut Health Probiotic & Terry Naturally Curcumin. I have also added Wellness Formula, Sprouts Organic Mushroom Immune Tincture, Nature’s Plus Ear, Nose & Throat K12 Probiotics & Emerald Labs PureWay C. Of course, this is in addition to eating lots of whole, unprocessed food, especially organic vegetables, fruits and herbs. I always drink kombucha and eat fermented vegetables like Wildbrine Kraut to keep my gut functioning well. I take probiotics daily and give them to my daughter as we know our immune system starts with good gut health and microbiome diversity.”

Q: How have you been taking care of yourself or others during this time?

A: “For self-care, my daughter and I have been having spa days with manicures and pedicures using the Mineral Fusion Nail Polish and Alba Coconut Hydrate Face Masks. I like to keep my activity up by taking walks outside, jumping rope, strength exercises with bands or dancing with my daughter! I’ve also been enjoying the extra time at home by taking a relaxing bath using Sprouts Sleep Epsom Salt and the CBD Serenity Soak. To help others around me, specifically my co-workers, I created a handout briefly explaining the wellness products that are provided in our breakroom and their benefits.”

Laura Team Member

Laura, Silverdale, WA

Q: What does your daily wellness routine look like and what products help fuel your day?

A: “In the morning, while I’m getting ready for my day, I take some vitamin C and Silver Wings Colloidal silver with Olive Leaf to help boost my immune system. While at work, I like to keep lavender and peppermint essential oils on hand to help with any anxiety or headaches. I love utilizing fresh fruit, like a big juicy mango or whatever I’m craving, to help give me energy throughout the day.”

Q: How have you been taking care of yourself or others during this time?

A: “In my free time I enjoy knitting, reading and working out. My at-home workouts consist of HIIT (high-intensity interval training) and yoga. I like to cook at home so that I’m in control of what goes into my meals, but sometimes I’ll get one of the Butcher Shop One Pan Meals for a quick, easy dinner. I’ve also been enjoying my self-care routine at home which includes Sprouts Lavender Epsom salt baths with a face mask. While at work, I like to utilize the Sprouts Tart Orange Fizzy Vitamin C packets and make sure that I’m staying hydrated during a busy day with plenty of water.”

    Ingredients:
    • 1/4 tsp. Italian seasoning
    • 3/4 cup Fresh orange juice
    • 1/4 cup Extra virgin olive oil
    • 1/4 tsp. Sea salt
    • 1/2 tsp. Orange zest

    Homemade colorful playdough

    Day 2: DIY Play Dough

Keep the kids busy with simple, homemade play dough. Here’s how:
    Ingredients:
    • 2 cups All-purpose flour
    • 3/4 cup Salt
    • 4 tsp. Cream of tartar
    • 2 Tbsp. Coconut oil
    • Food coloring of choice
How to: Combine ingredients in a large pot and cook over medium heat until dough has thickened. Remove from heat, placing the dough in a large bowl to cool slightly. Once cooled, knead dough until smooth and divide into six balls. Add food coloring of choice to each ball and store in a bag or jar.

    Day 3: At-home Cleaning Spray

Freshen up your home with a natural, homemade cleaning spray. Not only is it free from harsh chemicals, the essential oils will leave your home smelling like a relaxing, spa retreat.
    Ingredients:
    • 1 Empty spray bottle
    • 1/2 cup White vinegar
    • 1/2 cup Rubbing alcohol (70% or more)
    • 1 cup Distilled water
    • 3-5 drops Essential oil or citrus rinds of choice
How to: Combine all ingredients into an empty spray bottle and use to wipe down or freshen up surfaces around your home.
    Oat and Banana Pancakes

    Day 4: Three Ingredient Pancakes

Tied for ingredients while you’re at home? No worries! This easy, kid-friendly pancake recipe only requires three ingredients: bananas, oats and eggs.
    Ingredients:
    • 2 Bananas, ripe
    • 2 Eggs
    • 1/2 cup Oats
How to: Mash bananas thoroughly in a medium-sized bowl. Add the eggs and oats, stirring until the mixture is combined. Heat a medium skillet over medium heat, adding a non-stick cooking spray or coconut oil—whichever is available. Pour the mixture onto the skillet, letting cook until the sides are firm and golden (about four minutes), then flip the pancake, cooking until golden brown (about 2 minutes). Repeat with the remaining batter. Tip: If you have the ingredients, try serving with fresh fruit, creamy peanut butter or sweet-spicy cinnamon for a fun take!

    Day 5: No-bake  Cookies

Satisfy your sweet tooth cravings without the bake-time! No-bake cookies are a delicious blend of nutty peanut butter and rich cocoa—perfect for making your day a little better.
    Ingredients:
    • 2 cups Granulated sugar
    • 1/2 cup Butter
    • 1/2 cup Milk
    • 1/4 cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 1 tsp. Vanilla extract
    • 3 cups Quick oats
    • 1/2 cup Peanut butter, creamy or crunchy
How to: Combine the butter, sugar, cocoa powder and milk in a medium-sized saucepan. Cooking on medium heat, stir the mixture frequently until all ingredients are blended, bringing the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, let sit for seventy-five seconds, refraining from stirring. If you find yourself running low on your favorite beauty essentials, you may be able to create them from scratch–like this homemade dry shampoo!

    • 1/2 cup Cornstarch
    • 1/2 cup Baking soda
    • 1-2 drops Essential oil of choice

Homemade pizza dough isn’t as hard as it may seem. Our friend, Danny Seo, gave us a simple, two-ingredient recipe that anyone can make!
    Ingredients:

    • 1 cup Organic Greek plain whole milk yogurt
    • Pizza toppings of choice
How to: Combine flour and yogurt on a cutting board or in a bowl, mix with hands until dough forms. Once dough is formed, sprinkle some flour on countertop or cutting board and roll dough into pizza shape with a rolling pin. Place dough on baking sheet. Add toppings of choice (Danny used tomato sauce, shredded mozzarella balls and added fresh basil once cooked). Fold in edges of dough to form a crust, cook 8 to 10 minutes or until crust is golden and cheese is melted at 450°F. Tip: If the dough feels too dry, add water a tablespoon at a time while pushing the dough down and out, stretching it flat in front of you with the heels of your hands.
