Have your water … and eat it too!

As the weather heats up and you’re spending more time outside in the sun, it’s important to keep your body properly hydrated with plenty of fluids. We’ve rounded up our favorite ultra-refreshing hacks from functional beverages with essential ingredients to the best fruits and veggies to keep you going all summer long.

hydrating beverages surrounded by sliced fruits

Tip #1: Drinks with a purpose

Refresh and rehydrate with a crisp glass of our newest good-for-you sodas, sparkling waters and electrolytes to help quench that midday thirst:

  • Betty Buzz Sparkling Mixers: Made with real fruit juice and simple ingredients.
  • Health-Ade Pop: Packed with prebiotics for a healthy gut.
  • Aura Bora Herbal Sparkling Water: Full of natural herbal extracts for a wholesome refreshment.
  • Mananalu Pure Water in Aluminum Bottles: A Certified Plastic Negative solution to single-use bottles

Tip #2: A Fresh Start to Your Day

When you wake up, your body is naturally dehydrated from sleeping at night. This is a perfect time to jump start your hydration for the day by drinking at least eight ounces of water upon waking and incorporating a fresh, green juice with breakfast.

Juicing not your thing? Try a hydrating, morning smoothie full of apples, cucumbers and ginger like this one.

Tip #3: Replace Packaged Snacks for Fresh Ones

Summertime is full of on-the-go activities that can have you reaching for dry, pre-packaged snacks. Instead, swap that bag of chips for fruits and veggies that will not only keep you hydrated in the heat but provide loads of good-for-you vitamins and minerals, too.

Try this: pre-slice all of your produce and store it in convenient, ready-to-grab containers for snack time. Here are some refreshing and hydrating options that will store well: cucumbers, apples, celery sticks, watermelon, cantaloupe, berries and bell peppers.

Tip #4: Add Color to Your Plate

Summer is the perfect time to try loads of refreshing fruits and vegetables. You can boost your hydration by simply adding more color to each meal. Try adding vegetables to your lunch and dinner like broccoli, zucchini, tomatoes, spinach, and sweet, juicy fruit to your breakfast, snacks and dessert.

Quick Tips for Shopping Produce

strawberries being washed in a colander

What are the most common mistakes customers make when buying produce?

One of the biggest mistakes is shopping with your eyes only—assuming brighter, perfect, or shinier is better. Some of the best-tasting fruits and vegetables might have slight imperfections, but are still perfectly flavorful. Another common error is overbuying. It’s better to buy smaller amounts to avoid waste.

How often and what times are best to shop for produce to keep it fresh and minimize waste?

Shop for produce two to three times per week if possible. This helps you rotate items for peak freshness and reduce spoilage. As for timing, this depends on the store you shop and their frequency of deliveries. In general, mornings are usually best as the department is being restocked for fuller and fresher displays.

What’s something people don’t realize about the produce that’s flown in from other countries?

Many shoppers don’t realize that different regions grow different varieties of the same fruit or vegetable. Farmers pick varieties that thrive in their local climate or ship like a champ. That’s why your Kent mango from Peru might be soft, sweet, and juicy, while one from Florida brings the firm, fibrous flair of a Tommy Atkins. It’s not a flaw—it’s just nature showing off its regional flavor game.

What trade-offs are shoppers making when they buy pre-sliced or pre-packaged fruits and vegetables?

Pre-sliced and packaged produce is the MVP of convenience—perfect for busy days, speedy lunches, or snack attacks on the go. The trade-off? You’re paying a bit more for the extra prep and packaging, and once opened, these ready-to-eat goodies don’t last as long. If you’re diving in right away, they’re a total win. Stocking up for the week? Whole fruits and veggies might be your better bet. It’s all about finding your personal produce sweet spot.

How can shoppers tell if a fruit or vegetable is truly ripe—and what signs are often misread?

Ripe fruit doesn’t wear a label—so use your senses! Look for visual cues: vibrant color, slight dulling of the skin in some fruits, or a full, plump shape. Give it a gentle squeeze, sniff for sweetness near the stem, and don’t judge by color alone. And when in doubt, ask your produce pro—they’ve got the inside scoop and many are happy to give you a sample!

What mistakes do people make when choosing items like avocados, melons, or tomatoes?

One-size-fits-all doesn’t work with fruit. Each of these fruits has its own ripeness cues, and a common mistake is using the same approach for all. Melons should smell sweet and feel heavy, avocados need a gentle give (not mush!), and tomatoes shine when fragrant and firm. It’s about using a combination of touch, sound, and experience to find the best fruit. Trust your senses—and skip the guesswork.

Are there any “sleeper hits” in the produce section—fruits or vegetables that are overlooked but are worth trying?

In spring, domestic asparagus is at its peak—harvested close to home, it’s sweeter and more tender. Green and purple artichokes are another standout, they’re not only visually striking, but their tighter leaves and deeper flavor make them great ideal for roasting or steaming. Spring onions, often confused with scallions/green onions, have more of bulb-shaped end and are sweet and flavorful!

For fruit, Gold Nugget mandarins are a standout in late winter into early spring. They have a bumpy exterior, but inside they’re seedless, intensely sweet, and incredibly juicy. California GEM avocados fly under the radar too. They’re rounder and slightly larger than Hass, with a thick, pebbly skin and a rich, creamy interior that holds well—even when ripe. And key limes, though smaller and more labor-intensive to juice, bring a bright, floral acidity that can completely elevate both savory and sweet dishes. Don’t be afraid to try something new—you might just discover your next favorite fruit or vegetable.

What’s one thing shoppers should know about produce handling or storage at home?

Don’t let your produce go bad before the party starts! Skip washing until you’re ready to eat, store herbs like flowers in a glass with a loose bag over top. Know which items prefer room temperature— tomatoes, avocados, bananas and onions do better on the counter than in the fridge. A little storage savvy equals fresher, tastier bites.

Put More Plants on Your Plate

Plant-based is more than a buzzword and has gained traction with many health-conscious individuals over the years. The popular movement is more than a diet and encourages folks to reach for more plants with fresh produce, whole grains, legumes and nuts to help fuel your day ahead! A plant-based diet packs a nutrient-dense punch and provides you with essential vitamins, minerals, loads of fiber and plant-based protein.

Good for you and the planet!

The idea behind a plant-based, vegan and vegetarian diet is to reduce or eliminate the number of animal products that are consumed in your day-to-day meals. When your plate is full of healthy, nutrient-dense foods, not only will it help you feel your best, but you can contribute to a healthier environment too. Studies have shown that a plant-based diet can contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduce land occupation while minimizing soil, air and water pollution.

How to get started

Bowl of plant-based foods on a brown cutting board.

Don’t quit all your favorite foods cold tofurky!

Making a switch in your diet can be done in small, easy steps to ensure you stick to your new plan. Try these simple swaps in your everyday meals:

  • Use marinated tofu or meat alternative in your meals.
  • Swap your morning coffee creamer with a nut-based creamer.
  • Try a plant-based yogurt or a protein bar as an afternoon snack.

Load up on produce

Filling your plate with a variety of fresh produce like fruit, vegetables and potatoes, will help keep you fuller, longer. With the increase in nutrient-dense, fibrous foods, you won’t want to reach for those highly palatable snacks that may deter you from your new plant-based or vegan diet. Pro tip: Vegetables like portabella mushrooms and eggplants have a similar texture to meat when cooked and can act as the main component of your dish.

Simplify your grocery hauls

Planning a complete diet overhaul in one swoop could be very overwhelming! Start to slowly replace the items in your pantry and refrigerator with each trip, not all at once. When you shop at Sprouts, we make it simple to navigate the aisles and easily spot which items are plant-based with convenient shelf tags. Plus, we’re always on the hunt for the newest, most innovative plant-based and vegan products, so you don’t have to be!

omi product group

Welcome to OMI, where outside meets inside!

OMI products are expertly formulated to combat the signs of aging—including wrinkles, dryness and thinning hair. Their formulas promote a youthful appearance by supporting three major building blocks in the body: collagen, keratin and elastin. This age-fighting trio of “beauty proteins” helps provide structural support for your skin and preserve the integrity of cells and tissues.

Collagen

An abundant natural protein that builds your skin’s thickness and suppleness. It accounts for 80% of the skin’s dermis, the mid-layer responsible for firming and plumping your skin. As the body ages, existing collagen begins to break down and new collagen becomes more difficult to produce.

Keratin

This fibrous protein helps maintain beautiful, strong and healthy hair, nails and skin. It accounts for a large portion of the epidermis, or top layer of skin, and helps to form a protective layer on the skin’s surface.

Elastin

Made up of an intricate network of fibers, this elastic protein plays a large role in the skin’s ability to stretch and return to shape. A thousand times more elastic than collagen, a lack of this beneficial protein can lead to sagging or wrinkled skin.

The Sweetest of the Bunch

Bite into fresh, juicy, California-grown grapes
at the peak of their season.

Here are some of the unique varieties to keep an eye out for:

Tips for the bunch when they lose the crunch

Become a grape pro and learn how to roast, freeze and dehydrate grapes when they become overripe!

Roast ’em

Roasted grapes are a perfect addition to any dish! Roasting brings out their rich, sweet flavor.
Here’s how:
  • Toss your grapes with olive oil and roast at 420° for 20-25 minutes.
  • Once done, let them cool and add to your favorite salads, share on a charcuterie board, serve on a pizza or just snack on ‘em alone.

Freeze ’em

The easiest but also the coolest option, this treat will keep you frosty in the summer months.
Here’s how:
  • Place washed and dried grapes on a sheet pan or in a bowl and freeze for 1-2 hours.
  • Once done, snack away on these mini pops of flavor or store ‘em in a freezer bag for up to 12 months.

Dehydrate ’em

We’re raisin the stakes! Why use store-bought raisins when you can make them yourself?
Here’s how:
  • Preheat your dehydrator or oven to 180° and wash & blanch your grapes (to blanch, place in boiling water for 30 seconds and then transfer to a bowl of ice water).
  • Next, remove the stems, cut in half and set in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Place in your dehydrator or oven for 18-24 hours, rotating halfway through.
  • Once dried, store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.
