Crist Orchards Family Photo

Crist Bros. Orchards

Since 1883, members of the Crist family have been farming in Orange County, New York. By 1927, their family farm in Walden had transitioned to become one of the first on-farm apple storage facilities in the Hudson Valley region. Today, Crist Bros. farms 600 acres of orchards, producing approximately 500,000 bushels of a dozen unique apple varieties including SnapDragon, SweeTango, RubyFrost and Golden Delicious. They are constantly striving toward increased sustainability, with water and environmental conservation measures at the heart of their business. Crist Bros. considers their employees their most valued asset, with about 80 people employed year-round and closer to 150 at the peak of their growing season!

Fish Creek Orchards

With farms in Waterport, New York, Fish Creek Orchards produces a wide variety of delicious apple crops including Honeycrisp, SweeTango, Gala, Ambrosia, SnapDragon, Fuji and Pink Lady. Their legacy began in 1980, when Rod Farrow traveled from England to learn the ins and outs of fruit production from New York grower, George Lamont. Farrow took over ownership of the 500-acre farm in 2009 and later opted to continue the line of succession by selling his stake in the business to local grower Jason Woodworth and general manager Jose Iniguez, the latter of whom immigrated from Mexico at age 19 to work on Lamont’s farm. Today, Woodworth and Iniguez run Fish Creek, cultivating the unique terroir of New York State into great-tasting apples. Their orchards are found on the shores of Lake Ontario, which means the lake-effect elements keep their trees warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. The result is a crisp, sweet apple that can’t be beat!

Fix Bros Orchards with Owner

Fix Bros. Fruit Farm

The Fix Bros. Fruit Farm was established in 1899 when John Henry Fix emigrated from Germany. He gradually added acres, enlarging his orchards in Hudson, New York over the years. Decades later, his descendants purchased an adjoining farm and planted additional orchards, starting a “Pick your Own” operation selling cherries, peaches and apple orchards to the public. Today, the farm is operated by the fifth generation of the Fix family, producing a variety of apple crops including Ginger Gold, Honeycrisp, McIntosh and EverCrisp®. “New York has the perfect growing climate for apples. We have wet springs in the Hudson Valley, nurturing our young apple buds and blossoms as they grow,” says Bob Fix. “The flavor of New York apples is unparalleled!”

Siete logo next to family photo

The Siete story began with the Garza family’s journey to health. In search of new ways to enjoy traditional foods without sacrificing flavor, Veronica Garza experimented with innovative ingredients in the kitchen. After creating almond flour tortillas that her Grandma Campos said “taste better than my homemade tortillas,” the Garzas knew they had something special. Siete continues to make delicious better-for-you products using simple and nourishing ingredients the whole family can enjoy together.

The Sweetest of the Bunch

Bite into fresh, juicy, California-grown grapes
at the peak of their season.

Here are some of the unique varieties to keep an eye out for:

Tips for the bunch when they lose the crunch

Become a grape pro and learn how to roast, freeze and dehydrate grapes when they become overripe!

Roast ’em

Roasted grapes are a perfect addition to any dish! Roasting brings out their rich, sweet flavor.
Here’s how:
  • Toss your grapes with olive oil and roast at 420° for 20-25 minutes.
  • Once done, let them cool and add to your favorite salads, share on a charcuterie board, serve on a pizza or just snack on ‘em alone.

Freeze ’em

The easiest but also the coolest option, this treat will keep you frosty in the summer months.
Here’s how:
  • Place washed and dried grapes on a sheet pan or in a bowl and freeze for 1-2 hours.
  • Once done, snack away on these mini pops of flavor or store ‘em in a freezer bag for up to 12 months.

Dehydrate ’em

We’re raisin the stakes! Why use store-bought raisins when you can make them yourself?
Here’s how:
  • Preheat your dehydrator or oven to 180° and wash & blanch your grapes (to blanch, place in boiling water for 30 seconds and then transfer to a bowl of ice water).
  • Next, remove the stems, cut in half and set in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Place in your dehydrator or oven for 18-24 hours, rotating halfway through.
  • Once dried, store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.

So Delicious Dairy Free

A brand that welcomes everyone to its table, So Delicious Dairy Free is working to improve the well-being of its farmer partners through a new, long-term project. In August 2021, the brand launched the Good People Loop, a program that starts with empowering our coconut farmer partners across our supply chain with a holistic training approach offering education, resources and tools to support their social and economic empowerment. Starting with coconuts, by promoting organic farming and helping coconut farmers implement more sustainable, regenerative farming practices, So Delicious Dairy Free aims to increase crop yields by 50 percent and increase our coconut farmer partner income by 100 percent over the next five years, to help alleviate poverty and give them a fair shot to thrive in the global economy.

Silk

Silk is trying to do its part by developing plant-based food systems that work in harmony with nature and help restore the land. Its plant-based beverages have a lower carbon footprint than US conventional dairy milk. Silk balances all the water used in its manufacturing facilities to make its products, restoring it back to nature. As the first Charter Sponsor of the Change the Course program in 2013, Silk has supported over 35 projects in water-stressed locations helping restore more than 8.7 billion gallons of fresh water.

Horizon Organic

Horizon Organic has a strong commitment to people, the planet and animals. As the climate changes, the brand’s actions and the way they farm must evolve with it. As pioneers in the organic industry, Horizon is devoted to raising the bar to ensure they are respecting the world while creating the best milk possible. Horizon Organic, the largest USDA certified organic dairy brand in the world, has committed to becoming carbon positive across its full supply chain by 2025. For Horizon, carbon positive means achieving net-zero carbon emissions and going above and beyond by removing or preventing additional carbon from entering the atmosphere. Achieving this commitment will make Horizon Organic the first national dairy brand to be carbon positive.

Wallaby Organic

Wallaby Organic creates deliciously crafted yogurts with quality organic milk from cows raised on farms that are working to implement practices that support the environment, many of which participate in Danone’s soil health program. All Wallaby products are certified organic, meaning they are made from ingredients produced without the use of added growth hormones, antibiotics and toxic persistent pesticides per National Organic Program regulations.

Caramel Apple-y Ever After

Share article Caramel Apple-y Ever After on:
FacebookTwitterPinterestPrint

Autumn is the time for crisp, cool breezes, falling leaves and cozy, comforting fall foods. What better way to embrace fall’s a-peel than with an ooey, gooey caramel apple? Whole caramel apples can be messy and tough to eat, so try using skewered fruit slices instead. Crafted with crisp apples, wrapped caramels and goodies from our Bulk Department, they’re a perfect dessert for parties, family outings or just a fun afternoon snack. Follow our easy instructions for a sweet harvest treat that’ll leave you satisfied to the core.

Caramel apple board with bowls of toppings

Step 1: Prep Your Apples

Slice each apple into bite-size pieces and skewer. Blot any moisture off with a paper towel or cloth. This will help the caramel stick to the apple slices.

Step 2: Make a Rolling Station

Caramel sets quickly, so you’ll want to have everything ready and laid out in advance. For easy cleanup, set up your apple decorating station with lined muffin tins filled with each ingredient. You’ll also need a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, so you have a place to set your finished apple slices.

Step 3: Prepare the Caramel

Take a shortcut from time-consuming homemade caramel by using wrapped caramel candies from our Bulk Department. You’ll need about 35-40 caramels, unwrapped, to make a batch of five apples. Place the caramels in a small saucepan with 2 Tbsp of milk or water and heat on medium until melted.

Step 4: Dip ‘Em and Decorate

Dip the apple in the caramel and use a knife to spread it over both sides of the apple slice. Sprinkle on your favorite toppings, rotating the skewer to get both sides of the slice. Set completed apple slices on the parchment paper to dry.
Tip: For an extra sweet touch, melt your favorite chocolate in the microwave and use a spoon to drizzle a chocolatey swirl atop your cooled, treat-covered apple.
