Great Vegetables for Grillin’ in Summer

The high heat and smoky flavors of a grill can work wonders on certain vegetables, including some that would surprise you. The trick is in the timing. And, like everything, a little bit of preparation goes a long way.

Grilling Corn on the Cob

Fresh corn grills beautifully, especially when the heat caramelizes the kernels instead of steaming them. Take a peek a few different methods for grilling corn:

  • Keep the husks on and place them directly on the grill
  • Husk and wrap them in aluminum foil with butter and honey
  • Soak them in water prior to placing directly on the grill
  • Husk them fully, coat them lightly in oil or butter, and place them directly on the grill. Just make sure you turn them frequently!

Grilling Asparagus

Asparagus is a favorite and so easy! Just Snap off the bottom end, marinate in olive oil, and add a little salt and/or lemon zest.
Tasty tip: cook for 4 minutes on the grill, turning once, and they’re done.

Yams and Sweet Potatoes

Cut them into 3/8-inch slices, skewer and place on the grill for about 10 minutes.
Tasty tip: don’t worry about how dark they get on the outside, you can always peel off the outer layer with a fork. You want to make sure they are thoroughly cooked so you don’t end up with a hard, raw core.

Red Peppers

Stem and seed them, then cut into julienne strips. Marinate these in oil and then place on a very hot grill using a grilling basket or skewers and let the skin blacken just a bit.

Eggplant

Cut the eggplant crosswise into slices that are at least 1/2-inch thick; marinate with your favorite oil; then grill for about 12 minutes per side.
Tasty tip: Eggplant is high in water content, make sure you leave enough skin and flesh on it.

Radicchio

Slice it into length-wise quarters, apply the usual oil/salt marinade, and grill for about 5 minutes per side.
Tasty tip: the slight charring along with the purplish-red color of the leaves looks gorgeous.

Summer Grilling Tips: Don’t Let it Slip Through the Cracks

Nothing is worse than watching an expertly grilled onion browned on the edges and perfectly caramelized fall through the grill and land in a pile of ash. There are three or four good methods for keeping your veggies above the flames instead of in them.

  1. Buy a hinged grilling basket. You can find them in just about any kitchen accessory store, and there are plenty online as well. One real advantage to these baskets is that they are not being used to cook meat, so they tend to stay much cleaner than your regular grill top.
  2. Set wire cooling racks perpendicular to the direction of your regular grill surface. By “cross-hatching” these, you reduce the hole space and can keep those veggies from taking a dive. Be sure to spray or oil your racks before using them, and to clean them off promptly when done.
  3. Wooden skewers are cheap and can be protected from the heat by soaking them before use. Metal skewers also work great, but conduct the heat and handle with tongs or oven mitts. Of course, getting the vegetables to stay on the skewers is no easy task. Skewers work well with peppers, mushrooms, small potatoes (like Yukon golds), zucchini or summer squash, and some onions. Don’t use skewers with cherry tomatoes or asparagus. It won’t end well.

omi product group

Welcome to OMI, where outside meets inside!

OMI products are expertly formulated to combat the signs of aging—including wrinkles, dryness and thinning hair. Their formulas promote a youthful appearance by supporting three major building blocks in the body: collagen, keratin and elastin. This age-fighting trio of “beauty proteins” helps provide structural support for your skin and preserve the integrity of cells and tissues.

Collagen

An abundant natural protein that builds your skin’s thickness and suppleness. It accounts for 80% of the skin’s dermis, the mid-layer responsible for firming and plumping your skin. As the body ages, existing collagen begins to break down and new collagen becomes more difficult to produce.

Keratin

This fibrous protein helps maintain beautiful, strong and healthy hair, nails and skin. It accounts for a large portion of the epidermis, or top layer of skin, and helps to form a protective layer on the skin’s surface.

Elastin

Made up of an intricate network of fibers, this elastic protein plays a large role in the skin’s ability to stretch and return to shape. A thousand times more elastic than collagen, a lack of this beneficial protein can lead to sagging or wrinkled skin.

OMI WellBeauty™ Build + Protect supports these three essential proteins to form the foundation of healthy, glowing skin. Farm-fresh Produce

Sprouts Farmers Market partners with farmers across the country to bring goodness into each of our communities. We strive to choose farms that promote healthy, clean farming practices to bring you and your family the best produce!

Crist Orchards Family Photo

Crist Bros. Orchards

Since 1883, members of the Crist family have been farming in Orange County, New York. By 1927, their family farm in Walden had transitioned to become one of the first on-farm apple storage facilities in the Hudson Valley region. Today, Crist Bros. farms 600 acres of orchards, producing approximately 500,000 bushels of a dozen unique apple varieties including SnapDragon, SweeTango, RubyFrost and Golden Delicious. They are constantly striving toward increased sustainability, with water and environmental conservation measures at the heart of their business. Crist Bros. considers their employees their most valued asset, with about 80 people employed year-round and closer to 150 at the peak of their growing season!

Fish Creek Orchards Family Photo

Fish Creek Orchards

With farms in Waterport, New York, Fish Creek Orchards produces a wide variety of delicious apple crops including Honeycrisp, SweeTango, Gala, Ambrosia, SnapDragon, Fuji and Pink Lady. Their legacy began in 1980, when Rod Farrow traveled from England to learn the ins and outs of fruit production from New York grower, George Lamont. Farrow took over ownership of the 500-acre farm in 2009 and later opted to continue the line of succession by selling his stake in the business to local grower Jason Woodworth and general manager Jose Iniguez, the latter of whom immigrated from Mexico at age 19 to work on Lamont’s farm. Today, Woodworth and Iniguez run Fish Creek, cultivating the unique terroir of New York State into great-tasting apples. Their orchards are found on the shores of Lake Ontario, which means the lake-effect elements keep their trees warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. The result is a crisp, sweet apple that can’t be beat!

Fix Bros Orchards with Owner

Fix Bros. Fruit Farm

The Fix Bros. Fruit Farm was established in 1899 when John Henry Fix emigrated from Germany. He gradually added acres, enlarging his orchards in Hudson, New York over the years. Decades later, his descendants purchased an adjoining farm and planted additional orchards, starting a “Pick your Own” operation selling cherries, peaches and apple orchards to the public. Today, the farm is operated by the fifth generation of the Fix family, producing a variety of apple crops including Ginger Gold, Honeycrisp, McIntosh and EverCrisp®. “New York has the perfect growing climate for apples. We have wet springs in the Hudson Valley, nurturing our young apple buds and blossoms as they grow,” says Bob Fix. “The flavor of New York apples is unparalleled!”

Hudson River Fruit Distributors

Hudson River Fruit Distributors

Located in New York’s Hudson Valley, Hudson River Fruit Distributors was founded in 1963 by Isador Albinder and his son, Harold.
