MULTI MUSTS: WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN YOUR MULTIVITAMIN
If you've ever stood in the Vitamin Department staring at the rows of multivitamins trying to figure out which one you should get, you aren't alone. Many people choose multivitamins for a little added health insurance or the promise of more energy. After all, vitamins are organic nutrients required by the body for growth, repair, normal metabolism and optimal health, but few of us get the right ones at the right levels. That's because no single food contains all the vitamins and minerals the body requires; moreover, the combination of eating on the run, high levels of stress, consumption of highly processed foods, and the lack of physical activity can lead to nutrient deficiencies.
Here are three key things to look for in your multi:
Look for a multivitamin that offers a balanced vitamin B complex. The term "B complex" refers to the eight essential B vitamins: thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B-6, folate and vitamin B-12. The B vitamins support circulatory function, hormone production, metabolism, brain function and the creation of proteins.
Your multi should provide vitamin A with at least half of that coming from beta-carotene or mixed carotenoids.
Natural Vitamin E
Be sure you're getting natural vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol) as opposed to synthetic vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopherol). Derived from vegetable oils, natural vitamin E is recognized by the body and absorbed more fully than its synthetic counterpart.
Is your diet oil rich? Omega-rich oils are found naturally in fish and flax, among other foods, and are readily available in tasty liquid or capsule form.
FACE THE FACTS: DO YOU KNOW EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO MAKE HEALTHY FAT CHOICES?
Fat has a bad reputation, but it's actually an important macronutrient needed for a healthy diet. Fat is a slow-burning, efficient source of energy (each gram of fat supplies the body with nine calories, far more than we get from protein or carbohydrates) that is also needed for the formation of some hormones. And while the amount of fat you consume matters, the type of fat you eat is most important.
Unhealthy fats (i.e., hydrogenated oils, trans fats, and most saturated fats) increase bad cholesterol, contribute to cardiovascular disease, decrease immune function and increase the risk of other degenerative diseases.
But there are also healthy fats, such as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats in the Omega-6 and Omega-3 families, which are made of essential fatty acids (EFAs). EFAs form a protective membrane around each of our cells and are critical for optimal health. They offer valuable nutritional support for healthy skin and brain function. Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.*
TIP: Jump-start your day with healthy, brain-boosting, heart supporting Sprouts Omega-3 enriched eggs. Sprouts Omega-3-enriched eggs contain more than 150mg of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) per egg, a key nutrient for supporting healthy brain, eye and nervous system.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF TAKING PROBIOTICS: COMMONLY CALLED "FRIENDLY BACTERIA," PROBIOTICS ARE AVAILABLE AT SPROUTS IN THE FORM OF DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS & FOODS.
Probiotics are live beneficial microorganisms that are widely believed to support healthy digestion and immune function.* These friendly bacteria are essential for gut health, as stress, low-quality foods and over-the-counter-medication can destroy probiotic activity which leads to lower immune function and digestive disorders.
Special Probiotic Needs:
- If you've finished taking antibiotics. Antibiotics wipe out both good and bad bacteria. Replenish your body with beneficial bacteria so the bad ones don't come back.
- Recurring sickness. Healthy bacteria improve the immune function and reduce infection.
- Digestive disorders. Regular supplementation of probiotics may help restore the digestive tract.
- Yeast infections. Daily intake of lactobacillus acidophilus has shown to reduce yeast and fungal infections.
